Kanchanpur: The Baijanath Basic School in Pariphanta, Shuklaphanta Municipality-8, Kanchanpur, has successfully brought its student dropout rate to zero, thanks to the Midday Meal Program. This initiative, aimed at providing nutritious meals to students, has not only retained enrollment but also significantly reduced absenteeism.
The school primarily serves children from economically disadvantaged families, many of whom were previously taken by their parents to work as daily wage laborers, disrupting their education. However, since the introduction of the midday meals, regular attendance has improved markedly.
“In the past, we faced issues with students repeating grades, dropping out, and frequent absenteeism. Now, with the enhancement of the Midday Meal Program, children are attending school regularly,” said Dabal Bahadur Thagunna, a teacher overseeing the program.
Although the municipality's Education Section allocates funds at a rate of Rs 15 per student, intended for students up to Class 5, the school has managed to extend the program to students through Class 8. The school has developed a meal plan offering nutritious dishes made from locally-sourced ingredients, ensuring students receive a balanced diet.
